Law & Order Set to Return for Season 26 on NBC
NBC’s Law & Order Season 26 Not Finalized Amid Speculation of Budget Cuts
Sources report that Season 26 of NBC’s iconic series Law & Order will not be designated as its final season. While specific details regarding potential budget cuts are still being worked out, such adjustments have become standard practice for long-running broadcast series, particularly those featuring large, prominent casts, including Dick Wolf’s dramas.
Despite its star-studded lineup, this season features a relatively compact ensemble of six series regulars: Tony Goldwyn, Hugh Dancy, Maura Tierney, Reid Scott, Odelya Halevi, and David Ajala.
Last year, Law & Order was renewed alongside its spinoff, Law & Order: SVU, but has since found itself in a precarious position this season. This shift was unexpected, especially given that the series appeared to regain its creative momentum after a challenging return following a twelve-year hiatus. Nevertheless, Law & Order‘s performance continues to fall short when compared to both One Chicago and SVU, despite its linear viewership being in line with the latter.
With a robust slate of five drama pilots, NBC is maintaining its flexibility by keeping Law & Order in a state of uncertainty, alongside the sophomore series Brilliant Minds and The Hunting Party.
Law & Order is widely considered to have the strongest prospects for renewal among this group. Brilliant Minds has already been canceled, while The Hunting Party remains under consideration, buoyed by its positive streaming performance on Peacock following its Netflix run.
Furthermore, it seems unlikely that NBC would decide to cancel a legendary series like Law & Order a second time without prior notice or an appropriate conclusion, particularly in light of the abrupt cancellation in May 2010.
Executive producers of Law & Order include Dick Wolf, Rick Eid, Alex Hall, Anastasia Puglisi, and Peter Jankowski. The series is produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment.
