LAPD Issues Alert About ATM Theft Scheme Aimed at Seniors
Los Angeles Police Seek Suspects in Elderly ATM Scam
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is investigating a sophisticated theft scheme that targets elderly residents using ATMs. Detectives are actively searching for two suspects allegedly involved in multiple incidents across Southern California.
On January 15, an 83-year-old man was defrauded while using an ATM in the 2100 block of Colorado Boulevard. Authorities report that the suspects employed a distraction tactic wherein one individual drops a $20 bill near the victim. As the victim becomes focused on the cash, the second suspect swiftly replaces the victim’s legitimate bank card with a counterfeit card already in the machine.
Later that same day, both suspects were observed withdrawing money from a bank on North San Fernando Boulevard using the victim’s stolen information.
In light of these incidents, police are urging ATM users, particularly seniors, to remain vigilant while using machines. Detectives recommend that individuals should not divert their attention if approached by someone alerting them about dropped money while their card is still in the ATM.
The LAPD has released photos of the suspects and is encouraging anyone who recognizes them to reach out to Detective Franssen at 213-486-5947. For anonymous tips, the public can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
