Lakers Outshine Rockets in Game 2 with Their New Star Trio
Lakers Seek New Big Three Dynamic in Playoff Victory
The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as a formidable force in the Western Conference playoffs, partly due to a standout trio: LeBron James, Marcus Smart, and Luke Kennard. The three players collectively scored 76 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and dished out 16 assists in a 101-94 victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 2.
James contributed significantly to the win with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. His dramatic two-handed dunk with just 55.3 seconds remaining sealed the game, ensuring that the Lakers maintained their 15-point lead built in the first half.
Smart added 25 points, alongside seven assists and two rebounds, showcasing his remarkable defensive skills once again. Kennard rounded out the trio with 23 points, six rebounds, and two assists, including two crucial free throws in the final seconds that capped the scoring.
The performance highlighted the Lakers’ ability to perform under pressure, where they excelled during the regular season with a 22-8 record in clutch situations—games decided by five points or fewer in the last five minutes. In contrast, the Rockets struggled with a 22-23 record in similar scenarios.
Kevin Durant returned to the lineup for the Rockets after missing Game 1 due to a right knee contusion. He scored 20 points in the first half but struggled in the second, ultimately finishing with just three points following foul trouble and tallying nine turnovers overall.
Game 2 saw Smart and Kennard stepping up in the absence of injured players Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Smart’s impressive first quarter included 14 points on just seven attempts, while Kennard chipped in another 10 points. Their contributions were instrumental in establishing a 49-34 lead in the second quarter.
During the regular season, the Lakers’ Big Three included Doncic, Reaves, and James, but the current lineup has proven effective in the playoffs.
In a related update, Lakers coach JJ Redick addressed reports concerning the recovery progress of Reaves and Doncic. "Austin has started a return-to-play plan, but we don’t have any timeline update for him,” Redick stated, adding that Doncic is expected to begin his court work soon.
The Lakers will look to extend their series lead in Game 3, scheduled for Friday night in Houston.
