Lakers Edge Out Pelicans with Luka and LeBron Each Scoring 30 Points
NEW ORLEANS — LeBron James and Luka Doncic delivered mesmerizing performances during Tuesday night’s game at the Smoothie King Center, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 111-103 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
James nearly achieved a triple-double, finishing with 30 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Doncic matched his scoring output with 30 points and added 10 assists, propelling the Lakers to their 23rd win of the season.
Despite the Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III shining brightly with an impressive 42 points, the team extended its losing streak to eight games. Early in the fourth quarter, the Lakers ramped up their defensive effort and offensive execution, outscoring New Orleans 18-4 and taking a 97-90 lead.
Yet, the Lakers had to maintain their intensity to secure the win. Late in the game, as Doncic struggled for possession, it appeared a 24-second shot clock violation was imminent. However, he regained control and unleashed a floating three-pointer, followed by another three from Doncic, stretching the lead to 105-96 with just under two minutes remaining.
Following the basket, James shared a celebratory moment with Doncic, placing his head in Doncic’s chest as the Pelicans called for a timeout.
The night also showcased an active Deandre Ayton, who contributed from the very first play with a lob pass to James for the opening basket. Ayton’s performance included a dunk off a return lob from James and ended with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks.
The Lakers entered halftime trailing 54-51, hampered by their three-point shooting, hitting only three of 17 attempts in the first half. They faced difficulties against the Pelicans’ bench, which outscored the Lakers’ reserves 19-9 during the same period. Doncic finished the half with 16 points and six assists, while James added 15 points and six rebounds.
The challenge continued for the Lakers in the third quarter as they fell behind by nine points, requiring them to play catch-up for the remainder of the game. The Lakers are scheduled for a back-to-back matchup against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
In injury news, Lakers guard Gabe Vincent traveled with the team but was deemed out for the Pelicans game due to a lumbar back strain. Vincent, who has been sidelined for the last nine games, may return for the game against San Antonio, contingent on his recovery. “We just downgraded Gabe,” said Coach J.J. Redick. “He has not had a setback, but we’re hoping he gets to play tomorrow. But again, it’s all about how he feels tomorrow.”
