Kristen Stewart: Cannes Film Festival’s Boldest Trendsetter
Kristen Stewart Challenges Cannes Dress Code with Bold Fashion Choices
Kristen Stewart made headlines at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival with her audacious fashion choices, continuing her reputation as a style rebel at the prestigious event. The actress, known for her unconventional approach to red carpet attire, wore a sheer Chanel ensemble during the photo call for her upcoming comedy, Full Phil.
Stewart’s look featured a Chanel spring 2026 couture set—comprised of a sheer gray tweed polo over a skin-toned tank and a coordinating knee-length skirt layered over shorts. Vintage Nike saddle oxfords completed her outfit. Tara Swennen, Stewart’s longtime stylist, commented that the lightweight materials made the outfit appear “more revealing than it was.”
Over the years, Stewart has consistently defied Cannes’ stringent dress code. At the Full Phil premiere, she opted for a daring red-and-black knitted gown from Chanel’s fall collection, showcasing a black bra and high-waisted briefs beneath the loose knit. To contrast the glamorous gown, she accessorized with Ruby Brown high-top sneakers, further emphasizing her commitment to personal style over traditional expectations.
Despite Cannes’ official guidelines, which prohibit sneakers at gala screenings, Stewart has often tested the limits of style at the festival. Her past protests against the high heels-only rule included removing her Louboutins on the Palais steps in 2018, proclaiming the need for change in gendered dress codes in the industry.
Stewart’s approach to red carpet fashion is not just about looking good; it also serves as a platform for broader discussions on women’s rights and fashion norms. "If a man and I were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘You cannot come in,’ I would respond, ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’" she stated in a past interview.
Tara Swennen, who has styled Stewart since she was 14, believes the rules at Cannes are adaptable. "If it’s not trashy and people remain polished, I think [the rules are] malleable,” she noted, advocating for freedom of expression through fashion.
Stewart’s distinctive style choices and her willingness to challenge traditional gender norms have made her a prominent figure at Cannes, ensuring that her appearances remain captivating and thought-provoking.
