Kings Fall Short Against a Fierce Colorado Avalanche
Avalanche Extend Winning Streak with Victory Over Kings
DENVER — Nathan MacKinnon netted the 399th goal of his NHL career, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. This win marks the Avalanche’s eighth consecutive triumph and continues their impressive performance at home, where they have now won 14 straight games.
MacKinnon also contributed an assist, bringing his season total to an NHL-leading 32 goals. Other Avalanche players who found the net included Jack Drury, Cale Makar, and Martin Necas, helping Colorado secure points in 28 of their last 29 games, with a record of 10-0-1 in their past 11 contests. With this victory, Colorado reached 65 points in just 38 games, a feat matched only by the 1929-30 Boston Bruins.
The Kings faced a tough matchup, with Corey Perry and Joel Armia scoring for the team. However, Los Angeles has struggled recently, suffering losses in seven of their last nine games.
Drury set the tone early, scoring midway through the first period. Perry answered with a power-play goal, leveling the score 5:15 into the second. The Avalanche regained the lead when Necas tapped in a puck lying on the goal line, followed by Nelson’s sharp shot that went past Kings goalie Anton Forsberg with 2:30 remaining in the second period.
Forsberg recorded 21 saves for the Kings, while Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 23 shots, including a critical save against Armia’s short-handed breakaway attempt late in the second. Armia, however, later managed to score while skating the length of the ice during a Colorado power play, marking the Kings’ NHL-leading seventh short-handed goal of the season.
Forsberg was pulled in favor of an extra skater with 2:26 left in the game, allowing MacKinnon to seal the victory with an empty-net goal just 1:37 from the final whistle. Makar then added a final goal with 45 seconds remaining.
The Kings will look to bounce back in their next game against Tampa Bay at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday.
