King Charles III is making a notable change to his 2025 Christmas broadcast by recording it in a new location—the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey. This marks the first time the monarch’s holiday message will be filmed in this historic setting.
On December 23, the palace confirmed that the King’s holiday message will air on Christmas Day, sticking to the long-standing tradition. This year’s broadcast was recorded earlier in December, bringing a serene and unique backdrop to the address.
In 2024, King Charles, age 77, diverged from established customs by filming his Christmas speech outside a royal residence for the first time since 2006, at Fitzrovia Chapel, near Pearson Square in London. This location held significance as it followed his announcement of undergoing treatment for cancer.
This year, King Charles continues his treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. He shared on December 12 that the upcoming year would bring a reduction in his treatment regimen.

Unlike King Charles, his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, traditionally recorded her Christmas messages at royal residences such as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Sandringham House, continuing a legacy in the Norfolk countryside.
As one of the most recognized obligations of the British monarch, the Christmas broadcast serves as an opportunity for the sovereign to reflect on the past year, comment on global events, and convey the essence of the Christmas season.
The tradition began in 1932 with King George V and was first televised by Queen Elizabeth in 1957. Messages have been recorded in advance since 1960 to accommodate optimal broadcast times for Commonwealth countries.
Westminster Abbey, where King Charles’ message will be filmed, boasts a rich royal history and is a significant site of pilgrimage. The King’s message is expected to draw upon this heritage. Pilgrims visit the abbey to honor Edward the Confessor’s legacy, with the Lady Chapel being the final resting place of numerous monarchs, including Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots.
