Kim Raver Shares Teddy’s Future Plans as She Leaves Grey’s Anatomy in the Season 22 Finale
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details from the Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy.
Teddy Altman’s journey at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has reached an uncertain pause, at least for now. Kim Raver, the actress portraying Teddy, and Kevin McKidd, who has played Owen Hunt—Teddy’s love interest and fellow trauma surgeon—both bid farewell to the medical drama during Thursday night’s season finale.
The episode resumes from last week’s gripping cliffhanger, where Owen’s life hangs in the balance. Ultimately, both characters are safe and leave for Paris with their children, seizing an exciting new career opportunity for Teddy.
As the episode begins, Teddy is seen desperately trying to contact Owen amid a chaotic influx of patients from a bridge collapse. Her panic escalates when first responders discover his abandoned car in the river, prompting a frantic situation that underscores their deep connection, despite recent strains, particularly around Teddy’s job offer in Paris.
This life-altering event compels both Owen and Teddy to reassess their priorities. After reuniting in the operating room, Owen encourages Teddy to accept the position in Paris and expresses his readiness to move with her and their children.
In a recent interview, Raver reflected on Teddy’s complex journey throughout her 14 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy.
“I’m so grateful for having been part of this incredible Shondaland family,” Raver shared. “This role has been such a big part of me. The crew and the fans are just extraordinary. It’s been a beautiful journey of a very multi-layered, complicated character.”
Following up on the evolution of Owen and Teddy’s relationship, Raver noted, “In our minds, that was always sort of the end game.” She emphasized the importance of Teddy’s growth, stating, "It took all of the highs and lows in the journey to come back to Owen."
Raver elaborated on the moments leading to their reconciliation, mentioning their turbulent experiences as pivotal. "I think when they’re sitting on the bench and she has to sign the divorce papers, there’s a moment of questioning,” she said, adding that their ability to grow both as individuals and as a couple is crucial to their narrative.
She expressed particular appreciation for the idea of forgiveness, stating, “We really dug into the flaws of being an individual and the mistakes made throughout it, but also the accountability.”
Addressing Teddy’s upcoming career milestone, Raver remarked, “For Teddy, she’s navigated her way through the system. I loved seeing her try to advocate for herself.” She described the significance of female support characters in Teddy’s journey, noting, “It’s relatable for women, that they’re constantly taking care of everyone else around them."
Raver also highlighted the collaborative experience of having Kevin McKidd direct the emotional finale. “It was extraordinary,” she said, emphasizing the deep connection developed through their shared experiences on set.
Reflecting on the significance of longevity in Grey’s Anatomy, Raver stated, “It’s been an absolute gift to be part of such an extraordinarily talented cast and crew. I didn’t take it for granted once.”
As the conversation concluded, Raver expressed her gratitude for the show’s impact on its fans. “This show exists because of them and for them, and getting to meet them has just been amazing.”
With Teddy’s storyline concluding for now, fans are left to ponder what awaits in the future, as Raver humorously suggested, "the whole hospital somehow going on location to Paris would be great."
