Kershaw Set to Represent the US in the World Baseball Classic
Clayton Kershaw to Represent U.S. in World Baseball Classic After Retirement
Clayton Kershaw will take the mound for the United States in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, a surprising turn after he announced his retirement merely four months ago. USA Baseball confirmed Kershaw’s participation on Thursday, marking a significant moment in his baseball journey.
The veteran pitcher declared his intention to retire on September 18, citing the conclusion of his 18-season career, all spent with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His final appearance for the Dodgers occurred during Game 3 of the World Series, where he entered as a relief pitcher with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 12th inning, with the score tied at 5-5 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In that pivotal moment, Kershaw successfully induced Nathan Lukes to ground out to second base, helping to maintain the tie. The Dodgers ultimately won the game 6-5, thanks to a home run by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the 18th.
Despite his accolades, Kershaw has never pitched in the World Baseball Classic. He was named to the U.S. roster for the 2023 tournament but withdrew due to insurance complications. Kershaw has previously represented the U.S. on a national team, playing for the 2005 18U squad that secured second place in the Pan American Championships.
The U.S. team will kick off its World Baseball Classic campaign on March 6 against Brazil at Daikin Park in Houston.
