Katherine LaNasa Talks About Dana’s Journey in Season 2 of The Pitt: No Perfect Endings Here
SPOILER ALERT: The following contains plot details from the Season 2 finale of The Pitt on HBO Max.
The second season of The Pitt, which premiered in January, continues to follow Dana, a nurse at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, as she navigates complex challenges following the harrowing events of the first season. Dana, who was victimized by a patient last season, returns as a fierce protector of her colleagues and patients, confronting new forms of violence and neglect within the hospital.
Actor Katherine LaNasa, who portrays Dana, describes the character’s emotional intensity this season. "They don’t wrap everything up in a bow," she said. "It was her getting in touch with her rage… She thinks that the hospital should be doing more to take care of her and care more."
In a pivotal moment in Episode 9, Dana is seen grappling with the systemic failures facing sexual assault victims, as law enforcement proves unreliable in handling sensitive evidence. This issue resurfaces in the finale, where Dana confronts detectives in the emergency room, expressing her frustration over their lack of respect for the victims involved.
"There’s this sort of rage about the lack of care and protection against women," LaNasa said. "She’s becoming very in touch with that. It’s to the breaking point with her."
Series creator R. Scott Gemmill emphasized the importance of portraying the experience of a rape survivor. "We wanted to take the time it takes to really show what happens, to try and demystify it and make it more palatable," he explained. He praised LaNasa’s performance and highlighted the emotional gravity of Dana’s role as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.
"Every woman has gone through feeling victimized at some point… She knows that this is the worst day in this young woman’s life and wishes she could make it all go away," Gemmill added.
LaNasa also noted how Season 2 honors the hard work of nurses, particularly through the character of Nurse Emma. "They really honored nurses quite a bit this season," she remarked. "Emma helps restore Dana’s appreciation of her calling."
The season concludes with poignant scenes underscoring the supportive relationships between characters. LaNasa reflected on a touching moment shared between Dana and another nurse, Perlah. "It was really cool to have that little physical moment together. It was really nice," she said of their shared understanding and grief.
As The Pitt closes its second season, it leaves viewers contemplating the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in an often chaotic environment, all while navigating personal trauma.
