Kate Middleton’s Heartwarming Question to Prince William During Their Wedding Carriage Ride
Prince William and Kate Middleton: A Royal Wedding Remembered
On April 29, 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton exchanged vows in a ceremony that captivated the world. The event marked nearly 15 years since their historic marriage at Westminster Abbey. After their nuptials, the couple embarked on a royal carriage ride to Buckingham Palace, where they delighted crowds with two memorable kisses from the balcony.
As they journeyed through the streets of London, Kate posed a heartwarming question to her new husband, while William guided her through the royal traditions. Professional lip reader Tina Lannin reported that during their carriage ride, William advised Kate to simply bow her head instead of fully bowing, noting, “I don’t think you should bow quite yet.” Amidst the festivities, he exclaimed, “It’s mad, it’s mad!” likely in reaction to the throngs of well-wishers gathered to celebrate.
William shared his joy with Kate, expressing, “Oh my goodness, it…really loudly here…these people are clapping.” When Kate asked, “Are you happy?” he responded affirmatively, underscoring the couple’s genuine affection. Reportedly, as they traveled in the open-topped 1902 State Landau carriage, Kate remarked, “You look happy.”
At the altar, a light-hearted moment occurred when William, addressing the sizeable congregation and viewers at home, joked, “We were supposed to have just a small family affair.” This quip almost elicited laughter from Kate, illustrating the couple’s ease with each other.
The historic carriage had also been used in the past for notable royal events, including the departure of Prince Charles and Princess Diana after their wedding in 1981. In his 2024 book Catherine, The Princess of Wales, royal biographer Robert Jobson revealed that during the carriage ride, William told Kate, “It was amazing. I’m so proud you’re my wife,” mirroring sentiments he voiced during the ceremony.
After their affectionate balcony kiss, William playfully requested, “One more,” before declaring, “That’s it, come on!” Following the balcony appearance, Prince Charles hosted a reception in the palace’s Throne Room, featuring fireworks and a performance by Ellie Goulding, culminating in a surprise dance by the newlyweds to "You’re the One That I Want" from Grease.
William and Kate’s wedding day remains a cherished memory, reflecting their unique bond and the public’s enduring affection for the couple.
