Kate Beckinsale Joins the Cast of ‘Twilight of the Dead’ with North American Deal Secured at Cannes
Kate Beckinsale to Star in ‘Twilight of the Dead,’ the Final Chapter of Romero’s Zombie Saga
Kate Beckinsale has been announced as the lead in Twilight of the Dead, marking a significant development in the long-awaited conclusion of George A. Romero’s iconic zombie franchise. The project, backed by Romero’s estate, has recently undergone notable changes, including a new cast, director, and financial support, with Beckinsale stepping into the role previously held by Milla Jovovich.
Set against a decimated Earth, the film’s narrative will explore the last remnants of humanity trapped amidst warring factions and an evolving threat from the undead. The Paz Brothers, Doron and Yoav Paz, known for their films The Golem and Plan A, are set to direct after taking over from Brad Anderson. Veteran stunt coordinator Ho Sung Pak, recognized for his work on Bullet Train, will oversee the film’s action sequences.
Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studios has secured the North American distribution rights and is poised to release the film in theaters across the U.S. and Canada, further propelling the project forward.
Romero had crafted a treatment for Twilight of the Dead prior to his passing in 2017, seeing it as the culmination of his extensive saga, which includes six films alongside various spinoffs and remakes. The franchise’s last installment debuted in 2009, and Twilight of the Dead was first announced in 2021. Producers have indicated that if this film performs well, the door remains open for additional films within the franchise.
Roundtable Entertainment will drive the production, with producers John Baldecchi and Sarah Donnelly at the helm. They are joined by executive producer Dominic Ianno and Suzanne Romero, among others. The producing team also includes Bob Yari, Shaun Sanghani of SSS Entertainment, and Kenneth Kim of Aanaxion.
International sales are being managed by The Syndicate, led by executive producers Jeffrey Giles and Michael Lurie, who presented the project at the Cannes market. Buyers have access to a screenplay and concept materials for review.
In a statement, Baldecchi expressed enthusiasm for Beckinsale’s involvement, stating, “Her extraordinary talent, emotional range, and commanding screen presence make her the perfect actress to lead a final chapter worthy of George’s legacy.”
The Paz Brothers echoed this sentiment, saying, “Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker. This is more than a continuation; it’s a responsibility." They emphasized their commitment to honoring Romero’s voice while providing a gripping experience for contemporary audiences.
Bob Yari remarked on the significance of bringing Romero’s final vision to the big screen, highlighting the film’s anticipated impact on fans long awaiting this conclusion.
Magenta Light Studios has produced several films, including Deep Water, Protector, Strange Darlings, and Bride Hard. Beckinsale is represented by Kleinberg Lange, while the Paz Brothers are repped by Verve and Zero Gravity.
