Kane Parsons Shares His Experience Working with Mentor Osgood Perkins on ‘Backrooms’ Film
While making his feature debut as A24’s youngest director, Kane Parsons received crucial support from an established figure in the horror genre. The writer and director of Backrooms, which premieres in theaters on May 29, praised producer Osgood Perkins as “a really great mentor figure” during the film’s development under his Phobos banner. This movie is adapted from Parsons’ 2022 web series.
“When we started production up in Vancouver, I was working very closely, literally in the same office with Osgood Perkins,” Parsons shared in an interview with DiscussingFilm. He noted that Perkins, alongside Chris Ferguson, assembled a seasoned crew, allowing Parsons to utilize invaluable resources throughout the filmmaking process.
Parsons continued, “There’s been all sorts of crazy stuff happening right now with people reaching out, but it’s generally been that group, and it’s been pretty insulated. It was a pretty quiet production; it was very peaceful and fun up there. So, we had a good time with it.”
In Backrooms, Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Clark, a furniture store owner who accidentally enters a bizarre realm of endless office space filled with dark secrets. His therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, portrayed by Renate Reinsve, embarks on a search for him.
Originally conceived as a creepypasta on 4chan in 2019, Parsons transformed Backrooms into a YouTube web series at the age of 16 before A24 facilitated its transition into a feature film.
Osgood Perkins, prominent in the horror scene, has garnered acclaim for various films, including Longlegs (2024), The Monkey (2025), and Keeper (2025). His next project, The Young People, is set for release later this year by Neon. He is also reportedly developing a new installment in the Longlegs series, featuring Nicolas Cage.
