Justin Theroux Shares His Take on Mr. House in Fallout and His Thoughts on the Tech Elite
Justin Theroux Steps into the Role of Robert House in ‘Fallout’
As Justin Theroux joins the cast of Fallout on Prime Video, he takes on the character of Robert House, a villain that many viewers may find reminiscent of contemporary tech billionaires.
“I don’t really think of him as the bad guy,” Theroux remarked, explaining that he enjoyed satirizing the billionaire tech class through his portrayal. “At least internally, that was sort of the fun of playing this character.”
Theroux elaborated on the similarities between House and real-life figures like Howard Hughes, stating, “I sort of saw him as just this incredibly nerdy, slightly heartless guy who believed in his technology, and believed in his right to sort of reorganize the world in the image that he wanted it to be. So, it was just fun.”
In the Season 2 premiere titled "The Innovator," Theroux’s character is introduced while eavesdropping on a heated discussion at a bar in a pre-apocalyptic 2077. Regular patrons criticize a televised interview featuring House’s public decoy, Rafi Silver. The episode progresses into a disturbing demonstration of House’s mind-control technology, which captures the attention of his disciple, Hank MacLean, portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan, in the year 2296.
With both timelines heading toward conflict, Theroux acknowledged the relevance of these themes, noting, “The topical aspect absolutely appealed to me… It feels like a safe way to explore those concepts, those ideas and those ramifications without it being a direct parallel.”
Additionally, Theroux expressed admiration for the technocrats of today’s society, stating, “They really are taking just some enormous liberties with what we as a population want or need. And we’re getting things that they want, that we didn’t necessarily ask for.” He believes that House in Fallout serves as a reflection of many of those complex personalities.
Rafi Silver, who plays House’s decoy, offered insight into the character dynamics: “Robert House likes to play with the world, and I’m one of those people, a character that he’s playing the world with like chess. It’s fun.”
As Fallout continues to unfold, Theroux’s portrayal of Robert House promises to provoke thought and discussion around the intersection of technology and society.
