Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Seth Rogen Join Forces in New Animated Film ‘Tangles’ with Sales Managed by Charades, UTA, and CAA
Charades Acquires International Rights to Animated Feature Tangles Ahead of Cannes Premiere
Charades has secured the international sales rights to Tangles, an animated feature directed by Canadian filmmaker Leah Nelson that explores themes surrounding Alzheimer’s disease. The film boasts an impressive voice cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Seth Rogen. It is set to make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The company will commence world sales at Cannes in collaboration with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance, both of which played key roles in arranging financing for the project. They will jointly handle North American and global sales.
Based on Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me, the film is scheduled to have a Special Screening at Cannes before participating in the Annecy International Film Festival in June, where it will compete in the main category.
The official synopsis reads: “When Alzheimer’s begins to erase her mother’s vibrant personality, Sarah leaves her exciting life as an activist and artist in 90’s San Francisco to return to her eccentric family in the conservative small town she recently fled. Initially confident she can manage the situation, she soon realizes she must accept the harsh, disorienting reality of the disease to become the daughter her family needs.”
Production of the film involves a remarkable lineup of producers, including Vicky Patel, Steve Barnett, and Alan Powell from Monarch Media, alongside Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and others from Point Grey Pictures, and Lauren Miller Rogen from LYLAS Pictures. Patel and Miller Rogen are noted Alzheimer’s activists, with personal experiences driving their commitment to the cause. Patel’s late father was diagnosed in 2003, prompting her to become an advocate for brain science research. Meanwhile, Miller Rogen lost several family members to the disease, leading to the founding of Hilarity for Charity, a nonprofit aimed at assisting families affected by Alzheimer’s.
The voice cast further includes Emmy Award winners Louis-Dreyfus and Rogen, as well as Academy Award nominee Cranston, along with Abbi Jacobson, Beanie Feldstein, Samira Wiley, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Bowen Yang, Pamela Adlon, and newcomer Fern Grandin.
Nelson, collaborating with Sarah Leavitt and Trev Renney, adapted the graphic novel for the film. She is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, while Louis-Dreyfus and Rogen are represented by CAA and UTA, respectively.
Charades will arrive at Cannes with a notable lineup of 10 films in official selections and parallel sections, including contenders for the Palme d’Or like Parallel Tales and A Man of His Time, as well as Cannes Critics’ Opener In Waves and Directors’ Fortnight selection I See Buildings Fall Like Lightening by Clio Bernard.
