Judd Apatow Gathers Comedic Talent for ‘The Comeback King’
Renowned director and producer Judd Apatow is set to helm a new Universal Pictures comedy, titled The Comeback King, featuring an impressive lineup of comedians. The cast includes Leanne Morgan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Atsuko Okatsuka, all of whom recently received acclaim for their Hulu specials Night Thoughts and Father. Other notable names joining the project are Vanessa Bayer, Tig Notaro, Chris Fleming, Mike Birbiglia, and Nashville personality Big Fella.
While character details remain confidential, the film is centered around a country western star, portrayed by Glen Powell, who co-wrote the script with Apatow.
Additional cast members announced earlier include Cristin Milioti, Madelyn Cline, Stavros Halkias, and Li Jin Hao.
Apatow is producing The Comeback King through his long-term partnership with Universal Pictures, a collaboration that has previously brought successful films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Trainwreck. Glen Powell and Dan Cohen will serve as producers under Barnstorm’s first-look deal with the studio, alongside Kevin Misher of Misher Films. Executive producers for the film include Barry Mendel and Josh Church.
Oversight for the project is in the hands of Erik Baiers, Senior Executive Vice President of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development. The film has secured a theatrical release date of Friday, February 5, 2027.
