Joel McHale Enjoys Hosting Fox’s ‘The 1% Club’ Despite His Struggles with Puzzles at the Reality TV Summit
Joel McHale Takes Center Stage at Fox with Multiple Hosting Roles
Joel McHale has become a prominent figure at Fox, where he hosts the game show The 1% Club, leads the scripted comedy Animal Control, and continues his role in the unscripted series Crime Scene Kitchen.
In reflecting on his work, McHale expressed, “I can’t believe someone is paying me to be on camera and tell jokes. It’s the greatest job in the world.”
Initially, The 1% Club was developed by Amazon and later picked up by Fox for a second season, with McHale taking over hosting duties from Patton Oswalt, who led the first season. The show, based on a British format, features 100 contestants competing for a prize of up to $100,000. Participants answer a series of challenging questions designed to gauge their thinking processes, which can lead to both correct and incorrect answers.
McHale acknowledged the difficulty in remembering the names of all 100 contestants, humorously noting, “I can’t keep track of their names or where they are, and then they always send me an edit of here’s how many times you called this one person Carissa.”
Despite the challenges, he maintains that the experience is enjoyable. “I still get it wrong. But it’s really fun to make. Those people are super smart, so they’re clearly not in the entertainment business,” he added.
In addition to The 1% Club, McHale is expected to return for another season of Crime Scene Kitchen. This culinary guessing game requires bakers to identify and recreate desserts based on minimal clues, such as crumbs and food trails, with teams competing for a $100,000 grand prize.
