Jerry O’Connell is reflecting on a recent unfortunate event with a sense of humor. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that O’Connell’s restored 1979 Cadillac was pulled over by an officer from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department on January 14 for speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway.
“During the detention, the Sergeant observed that the driver appeared to be unhoused and, during questioning, was unable to identify the registered owner of the vehicle,” the department stated.

The vehicle was ultimately returned to O’Connell after deputies confirmed it was registered to his family. According to reports, he and his family were unaware of the theft as they were out of town at the time. The arrest of the driver led to processing at the Malibu/Lost Hills Station, from which the suspect was later released on a promise to appear in court.
O’Connell also acknowledged the theft on January 23 via his X account, where he humorously clarified, “Just to be clear, I am not the homeless man in this story. Very grateful for @LHSLASD THANK YOU!!!” He later took to Instagram to admit responsibility, revealing he had left the keys inside the vehicle.
“MY BAD. This one is on me,” he wrote, while following up with a post stating, “Again, @nypost, I am not homeless and I did not steal Tom Cruise’s car. Thank You Lost Hills Sheriffs for getting my car back @LHSLASD.”

This recent theft follows a previous incident in September 2025, when O’Connell’s cell phone and wallet, containing several hundred dollars in cash, were stolen during a yoga class in the Los Angeles area. A woman, whose identity has not been made public, reportedly staged an excuse to get access to his belongings while he was exercising.
“I wear the same pair of dirty old sneakers to yoga class and before class I slipped my wallet and phone into the dirty shoes. I’ve done that over 100 times,” O’Connell recalled. After speaking with staff, security footage showed the woman stealing the items, which led to financial losses for O’Connell, including expenses at a department store and a gas station.
He expressed disappointment over the loss of irreplaceable items, including a picture of Rebecca Romijn from high school and a $2 bill he received while filming Stand By Me.
