Jérémy Comte Discusses the New Drama ‘Eléo & Nova’ Produced by Roger Frappier as Global Constellation Takes on Sales
Global Constellation Acquires Jérémy Comte’s New Film, Eléo & Nova
Global Constellation has announced its involvement in the sales of Eléo & Nova, the latest project from Canadian director Jérémy Comte. This development follows the enthusiastic response to Comte’s debut feature, Paradise, which premiered in the Berlinale’s Panorama section.
Like Paradise, which explores the lives of two interconnected teenagers from Ghana and Quebec, Eléo & Nova centers around a youthful narrative. The film follows four siblings—a young boy and his three sisters—who find themselves isolated in a remote country house in northern Canada during an unrelenting heatwave, cut off from the outside world due to a power outage.
As the children wait for their parents to return, their initial sense of freedom quickly turns to dread. The siblings begin to wonder if the power failure and strange lights overhead are indicative of something ominous.
Principal photography is currently underway in the picturesque boreal forests of the Laurentians, Quebec. Comte is expected to return to the set this Saturday for the final eight days of shooting, following his trip to Berlin for the premiere of Paradise.
The film is produced by Academy Award-nominated producer Roger Frappier, known for The Power of the Dog, along with Sylvie Lacoste and Veronika Molnar at Montreal-based Max Films, which has a rich history of collaboration with renowned filmmakers such as Denys Arcand and Denis Villeneuve.
“Since his Oscar-nominated short Fauve, Jérémy Comte has emerged as one of the most exciting new voices in cinema,” Frappier remarked. “His latest feature, Eléo & Nova, a story drawn from his own experiences, is a blend of breathtaking visuals, raw emotion, and compelling narrative.”
Fabien Westerhoff, Managing Director of Global Constellation, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Comte on this new feature. “We are delighted to reunite with Jérémy Comte for this striking second feature, which further affirms the precision and sensitivity of his filmmaking,” he noted. “The film unfolds with haunting intensity as it charts the fragile threshold where childhood no longer offers refuge.”
Comte elaborated on the film’s storyline, highlighting its grounding in reality. “It’s about a family that moves to a remote country house. They are having financial issues, so the father leaves them to earn money, and they start to experience some strange natural phenomena.” As the young boy’s imagination ignites, he perceives the power outage and the aurora borealis as signs of an impending apocalypse.
“It becomes a quest for survival, an adventure movie viewed through the eyes of the children as an apocalyptic world unfolds,” Comte stated. Drawing from his own childhood experiences—growing up in the countryside with three sisters—the director emphasizes themes of environmental concern and eco-anxiety, saying, “I grew up vegetarian and often heard from my parents about the state of the world and its uncertain future.”
For casting, Comte partnered with Fauve and Paradise casting director Victor Tremblay-Blouin, scouting schools in and around Val d’Or, Quebec, for the role of the boy. “I wanted a boy who was both tough and sensitive. I sensed we might find him in Abitibi,” Comte said, praising the talent he discovered.
While he values the vibrant film community in Montreal, Comte aspires to broaden his horizons internationally, drawing inspiration from Quebec-born director Denis Villeneuve. “Montreal is culturally rich; everyone knows each other and there’s a lot of support. I want to create films that resonate with a broader audience. I’m beginning to develop ideas that could work in the U.S.,” he reflected.
Produced by Max Films, Eléo & Nova is co-financed by Telefilm Canada and SODEC, with additional support from Canadian and Quebec tax credits and in association with Radio-Canada. The film is set to be distributed in Canada by Opale and Entract.
In addition to Paradise, Global Constellation is also handling sales for The Education of Jane Cumming by Sophie Heldman and recently launched Bad Major at the EFM, among other titles.
