Jeremy Allen White Talks About ‘Springsteen’, The Bear Season 5, The Social Network Sequel, Joining Star Wars, and His Calvin Klein Campaigns
As filming begins for the fifth season of The Bear, Jeremy Allen White reflects on his commitment to the award-winning series, which has garnered him three Golden Globe Awards, three SAG Awards, two Critics’ Choice Awards, and two Emmy nominations for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. With a history of playing Lip Gallagher on Shameless for 11 seasons, White acknowledges the challenge of maintaining high-quality performances but refrains from indicating how many more seasons he envisions for his current role as Carmen Benzatto.
In addition to his television success, White has gained significant acclaim on the big screen, portraying real-life figures such as wrestler Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw and Bruce Springsteen in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. His performance as Springsteen has earned him a nomination for Lead Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, making him one of the few actors this year with two Golden Globe nominations. He discussed the unique challenge of embodying a recognizable star, especially with Springsteen observing his portrayal closely.
Transitioning from his long-running role on Shameless, White expressed feeling insecure about finding new challenges, yet he quickly embraced the opportunity that came with The Bear. He also navigated the risk of performing his own vocals for the Springsteen role, a first for him in his acting career.
White shared insights on his future endeavors, including his role as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film, The Social Reckoning, which continues the story established in The Social Network. This project features Oscar winner Mikey Madison as a whistleblower on Facebook and stars Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. He mentioned his excitement about joining the Star Wars universe, voicing Rotta The Hutt in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, and co-starring with Austin Butler in the thriller Enemies, where they exchanged experiences about playing iconic rock figures.
Lastly, White reflected on the surreal experience of appearing in Calvin Klein Underwear advertisements, noting the unexpected way it strengthened his bond with his children while he was away for filming.
