Jennifer Grey to Reprise Iconic Role in ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel
Jennifer Grey will once again embody the character of Frances “Baby” Houseman in an eagerly awaited sequel to the beloved film Dirty Dancing. Lionsgate announced on January 27 that production on the project will begin later this year, with experienced producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, known for their work on Hunger Games and Crazy Rich Asians, leading the initiative.
The screenplay for the new installment will be crafted by Kim Rosenstock, who previously wrote for Dying for Sex. Grey, now 65, expressed her deep connection to the role that resonated with many fans since its debut in 1987. “The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart, as it has in the hearts of so many fans over the years,” Grey stated.

Grey shared her curiosity about where Baby might be years later. “I’ve long wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like, but it’s taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film … and I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over," she remarked.
According to producer Jacobson, Dirty Dancing remains timeless, stating it is "that rare film that is as emotional, exhilarating, and rebellious today as it was the year it was released." She expressed enthusiasm about collaborating again with Grey and Lionsgate, highlighting the opportunity to return to Kellerman’s for "one more dance."
Grey, who will also serve as an executive producer for the sequel, has long wished to revisit this iconic role. Preparations for the sequel first came to light in 2020. Reflecting on her reunion with the character, Grey has previously noted that the film will not attempt to replicate the chemistry she had with the late Patrick Swayze, who passed away in 2009. “All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed—you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that. You just go for something different,” she stated.
The legacy of Dirty Dancing continues to inspire excitement, and fans will soon see what new narrative threads emerge in the forthcoming sequel.
