Jay Leno spoke candidly about his 45-year marriage to Mavis Leno during a recent appearance on the podcast Life Above the Noise with Maria Shriver. Mavis, who was diagnosed with advanced dementia in early 2024, has remained a central figure in Jay’s life as he navigates her health challenges.
"I’ve said this a bunch of times, you take a vow when you get married and people are stunned … they’re so shocked that you would live up to it," Jay remarked during the episode, which aired on January 11. He described the steadfast commitment he maintains to Mavis, emphasizing a shared journey through life’s difficulties.

The couple, who married in 1980 after meeting at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, have faced unique challenges, particularly following Mavis’s diagnosis. In April 2024, Jay was granted conservatorship over Mavis’s affairs as she continues to cope with her condition.
Jay also shared anecdotes reflecting societal attitudes toward commitment in modern relationships. "My favorite thing was — this is the most Hollywood thing. A guy said to me, ‘So, are you gonna get a girlfriend now?’” Jay recounted. He responded, “Well no, I have a girlfriend. I’m married. Married 45 years.” Despite pressures and expectations from others, Jay remains resolute in honoring his marriage vows.
"No, we’re kinda in this together here," he reiterated, reflecting on the changes in societal norms regarding fidelity. “That used to be the norm, and then when you strayed that was the out-of-whack part. Now the out-of-whack part is fairly common, and staying and doing what you’re supposed to do is stunning to people,” he noted.

After more than four decades of partnership, Jay expressed that Mavis’s diagnosis has presented their most significant challenge to date. "This is that thing of, ‘Okay, you’ve been pretty lucky up to this point. It’s been easy sailing. This is where it gets a little tricky,’” he explained.
Despite the difficulties, Jay’s commitment to making Mavis laugh remains a priority. He shared a heartwarming moment when Mavis, in the middle of the night, expressed her love, prompting Jay to joke, "You’re having a nightmare, go back to bed." Mavis found this amusing, and Jay reflected, “Oh, I got a laugh out of her.”
