Eric Dane Remembered Fondly by Girlfriend and Co-Stars After His Passing
Janell Shirtcliff has shared a heartfelt tribute to her late boyfriend, Eric Dane, on Instagram following his death from ALS on Thursday, February 19. Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, was 53 years old at the time of his passing.
In her tribute, Shirtcliff posted a series of joyful images and a video featuring the couple, captured by her daughter. The images portray the couple smiling together in a sunny garden and wearing matching Gucci loafers, underscoring their affectionate relationship.
Dane’s family noted in a statement that he "passed after a courageous battle" with ALS. They revealed he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were at the center of his world. “He was a devoted father and partner," they added.
The couple had been in an on-again, off-again relationship for about three years after Dane separated from his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, in 2017. Despite the separation, the couple never finalized their divorce.
Following Dane’s death, Gayheart expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. “There aren’t words to express our gratitude. You are truly holding us up during this difficult time,” she wrote.
Dane’s co-stars have also expressed their sorrow at his passing. Kate Walsh, who worked alongside him on Grey’s Anatomy, shared her grief on Instagram, saying, “I’m at a loss for words to try to express the sadness around Eric’s passing… First and foremost I am thinking of his girls and Rebecca and holding them in my prayers and my heart.”
As the tributes continue to flow from fans and colleagues alike, Dane’s legacy as a beloved actor and cherished family member persists.
