Jamie Lee Curtis to Star in Universal’s ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Movie Set for Early 2028 Release
Universal Pictures Shifts Release Date for Murder, She Wrote Movie
Universal Pictures has announced a new release date for its highly anticipated movie adaptation of Murder, She Wrote, originally set for December 22, 2027. The film will now premiere on February 4, 2028. The studio believes this timing will better suit the film’s audience compared to the crowded Christmas release window.
The decision to move the premiere comes as the holiday season is poised to feature several major titles, including Disney/Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, Lionsgate’s The Housemaid’s Secret, New Line’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a yet-untitled film by Nancy Meyers distributed by Warner Bros., and Sony Animation’s Buds.
Previously, Universal had planned for Murder, She Wrote to debut alongside Sony Pictures Animation’s Buds, the sequel to their recent success, GOAT. The competitive December 17 lineup also includes The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Avengers: Secret Wars, with Meyers’ film following on Christmas Day.
Directed by Jason Moore, the adaptation of the classic series stars Jamie Lee Curtis. The screenplay was crafted by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who recently worked on Dumb Money. Curtis was first reported to be considered for the lead role back in December 2024.
While plot details for the film remain confidential, it will be produced by Amy Pascal, along with Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood under Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal. Their recent project, Project Hail Mary, has already earned over $147 million globally.
Murder, She Wrote is based on the iconic crime drama that aired on CBS for 12 seasons from 1984 to 1996, featuring Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher, a retired schoolteacher turned mystery writer known for solving murders. Set primarily in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the series garnered 41 Emmy nominations during its run, with Lansbury nominated each year, though she did not win. She later reprised her role in four telefilms.
