Jackie and Shadow, the Bald Eagles of Big Bear, Face Heartbreak After Raven Attack Claims Both Eggs
Big Bear Lake, Calif. – In a heartbreaking turn of events, Jackie and Shadow, two bald eagles residing in Big Bear, have lost both of their eggs after a raven attacked their nest while they were away. This situation has left fans of the beloved pair devastated.
According to the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, Jackie laid her first egg on January 23 and followed with a second egg two days later. However, on January 31, the organization announced the grim news after revealing footage of a raven breaking the eggs during the absence of the eagle pair.
"We will never know why, but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully," Friends of Big Bear Valley stated. They speculated that Jackie and Shadow may have sensed something was wrong with the eggs or were protecting their territory, given the presence of other bald eagles in the area.
The organization noted that there remains a possibility Jackie could lay a second clutch of eggs since the initial loss occurred early in the season. However, there is no guarantee. For now, Jackie and Shadow must focus on recovering from the loss. It typically takes about a month for a female eagle to be ready to lay eggs again.
The loss follows a difficult winter for the pair, who experienced the loss of a chick after the births of eagles Sunny and Gizmo.
As the community processes this difficult news, the nonprofit has called for kindness during this challenging time. Viewers continue to follow Jackie and Shadow’s journey through a 24/7 livestream, watching in real-time as the pair navigates their nesting experiences.
