Jack Ryan and the U.S. Venezuela Intervention: Carlton Cuse Responds to Viral Clip and Hopes for Stability and Peace
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Sparks Conversation Amid Recent Events in Venezuela
The political action thriller Jack Ryan is once again in the spotlight, with online commentators drawing parallels between its plot and current events involving Venezuela. This renewed interest follows a U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
A clip from Season 2, which aired in 2019, has gained traction on social media. In it, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, portrayed by John Krasinski, posits that Venezuela is a significant threat on the global stage, noting its vast resources compared to traditional adversaries like Russia, China, and North Korea.
“The fact is that Venezuela is arguably the single greatest resource of oil and minerals on the planet,” Ryan states, highlighting the country’s status as home to the largest oil deposits in the world and an abundance of gold. He questions the disconnect between Venezuela’s wealth and its dire humanitarian crisis.
The scene also critiques the fictional Venezuelan president, suggesting that policies have steeply reduced the national economy and spiked poverty rates. Ryan warns that, unlike other nations facing economic turmoil, Venezuela’s proximity—just 30 minutes away from the U.S.—makes it especially concerning due to its next-generation nuclear missile capabilities.
The resurfacing of the six-year-old clip has resonated with viewers, who appreciate its relevance to the present-day situation in Venezuela.
Carlton Cuse, co-creator of Jack Ryan, reflects on how often reality mirrors fiction. “What always surprises you as a storyteller is how often real-world events catch up to fiction,” he told Deadline. He emphasized that the intention behind the season was plausibility rather than prophecy.
Cuse elaborated that the decision to focus on Venezuela stemmed from its enduring geopolitical significance, formulated over seven years ago. “We weren’t making a statement; we were telling a character-driven thriller rooted in the complexities of Venezuela’s political landscape,” he explained.
While the show’s narrative involves the fictional president’s downfall through actions taken by Ryan and the CIA Station Chief, the real-life military operation differed significantly in execution. “Any time the United States uses force abroad, it’s a moment that deserves reflection,” Cuse noted. He expressed hope that genuine peace and stability can emerge for those affected by ongoing events in Venezuela.
