Hulu is Bringing Us a New Drama Series: The Haunting of Alejandra by Steven Paul Martinez
Hulu Adapts V. Castro’s The Haunting of Alejandra Into Series
Hulu is set to develop The Haunting of Alejandra, a series based on V. Castro’s 2023 horror novel. The adaptation will be written and executive produced by Steven Paul Martinez.
The series promises to merge psychological horror with social commentary, delving into supernatural elements of Mexican mythology. The story follows Alejandra, a lawyer and millennial mother, who faces psychological challenges during maternity leave. As she navigates her struggles, she discovers that she is confronting the legendary figure of La Llorona rather than experiencing typical postpartum issues.
20th Television will produce the project, with notable executive producers including Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego from Hyphenate Media Group, as well as Gigi Saul Guerrero and Raynor Shima from Luchagore Productions. V. Castro will also take on a production role.
Martinez has previously contributed to CBS’s So Help Me Todd and served as a producer on the series Bull, where he began his television writing career. His film project, Stealing Santa, is currently being developed at Paramount.
Guerrero, a versatile filmmaker, is known for directing the biopic Jenni, which tells the story of Mexican-American artist Jenni Rivera. Her debut feature, Culture Shock, was part of the Hulu/Blumhouse series Into the Dark, earning her a first-look deal with Blumhouse. She also created the short film El Lazo De Petra, which garnered 87 million views on YouTube. Guerrero has various projects in the pipeline, including directing Santa Muerte for Screen Gems and 10/31 for Orion Pictures.
Longoria and Abrego’s Hyphenate Media Group have worked on several recent series, such as Nexaca, Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain, and Land of Women. They are also developing the comedy The Fifth Wheel, directed by Longoria for Netflix.
