How This Coach Redefines Multitasking for Greater Success
Coach Balances Multitude of Roles in High School Sports
As the 2025-26 high school sports season unfolds, Armando Fernandez has taken on an impressive array of responsibilities. Serving as the head coach for both boys’ basketball and volleyball at Sotomayor High School, he also stepped into the role of interim head coach for the baseball team. Additionally, he coached Franklin’s flag football team, leading each squad to playoff victories this season.
Beyond his coaching duties, Fernandez teaches religion at Cathedral High School and manages transportation logistics for the school. Balancing these commitments, he is also a devoted family man, raising three children aged 19, 10, and 4.
“I’m lucky to have an amazing wife who is supportive,” Fernandez remarked, acknowledging the challenges of his busy schedule. When he takes on yet another coaching role, his wife’s reaction is candid: “She rolls her eyes. Another one?”
Recently, Fernandez assumed the position of interim baseball coach at Sotomayor, where he, alongside a volunteer assistant coach, guided the team to a solid 7-2 victory over Smidt Tech in the City Section Division III playoffs.
In addition to his extensive coaching commitments, Fernandez has two daughters actively participating in softball, while his youngest is poised to make her T-ball debut.
As the saying goes, a coach must wear many hats, and Fernandez exemplifies this mantra both in sports and in life.
