How Robert De Niro’s ‘Midnight Run’ Inspired Channel 4’s New Show
Fans of the 1980s action comedy Midnight Run, featuring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, are in for a treat as the film’s spirit continues in a new format. Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing, set to premiere on Channel 4 this Monday, draws inspiration from the original movie.
In Midnight Run, De Niro portrays a bounty hunter who is handcuffed to a rogue accountant pursued by the mob and the FBI as they make their way from New York to Los Angeles. David Glover, the head of production company 72 Films, found inspiration in this premise nearly 40 years later, crafting a format that reflects the divisions of contemporary British society while maintaining an engaging narrative.
“At first they hate each other, but by the end of the film they’ve got past their differences,” Glover explained. “They almost love each other. That kind of comedy is often centered around just two people. I began discussing with Channel 4 how we could capture this notion of a divided Britain in an intriguing manner.”

Hosted by Jonathan Ross, known for his role in Celebrity Traitors, Handcuffed was a major topic at the recent London TV Screenings, held by distributor Fremantle.
The show features contestants with seemingly little in common. In the premiere episode, a body-positive feminist is paired with a “gym bro” accused of perpetuating toxic masculinity. In another pairing, a gentleman with an extensive car collection is cuffed to a hardworking London pub owner. Further unexpected pairings follow.
To win a prize of £100,000 ($135,000), pairs must remain the last duo standing. This entails being handcuffed together in front of a studio audience before stepping into each other’s lives for several days. Contestants then embark on a holiday before moving into a house, participating in quizzes, and competing in a final race. The format melds a state-of-the-nation theme with elements of comedy, drama, and heightened competition.
Tim Whitwell, an executive producer, humorously noted their contrasting backgrounds as they sought pairings for the show. “He’s posh, clever, and makes high-brow documentaries, and I’m an East End cockney who makes reality TV,” he said. “We handcuffed ourselves to each other, and something beautiful emerged.”
The production team faced unique challenges to ensure the show’s title was reflected in every moment. Whitwell emphasized that participants remained physically handcuffed, with only an extended chain provided for bathroom breaks. Any attempt to unchain results in elimination.
“We were very hardcore about it,” he stated. “They had to be handcuffed 24/7, which brought forth the comedy. Like in Midnight Run, they can’t escape each other, so we had to stay true to that.”
The show highlights societal divisions and examines what unfolds when diverse groups interact. However, producers emphasized that Handcuffed is fundamentally an entertainment program. It stands apart from Go Back to Where You Came From, a previous Channel 4 format criticized by some human rights groups for its approach to immigration narratives.
“We didn’t prioritize the mission; our goal was to entertain first, and the mission naturally follows,” added Whitwell, while Glover remarked that Go Back to Where You Came From dealt more explicitly with societal issues.
Jonathan Ross: More Than Just a Presenter

Ross’s involvement has been significant not just as the host but as a creative contributor. Glover noted, “He’s been advising on the format and offered some very clever suggestions.” Ross, a familiar face in television for decades, brings a unique perspective on effective presentation.
Whitwell added that viewers will gain insights into the “brilliantly witty” Ross as the show progresses.
As Glover and Whitwell prepare to introduce their show to potential buyers in London, they recognize its potential for international adaptation. Outgoing Fremantle global entertainment chief Andrew Llinares remarked, “Handcuffed offers entertainment with a significant purpose, which feels timely in today’s divided world. It features a scalable, engaging reality format that can resonate across different cultures. By compelling unlikely pairs to navigate daily life together, the series promises dynamic, character-driven moments alongside a clear competitive framework.”
Interest from streaming platforms has already been noted, with plans for potential Season 2 developments, particularly regarding the isolated house segments.
The creators encourage viewers to revisit Midnight Run in preparation for what they hope will be the next significant reality format.
