Homecoming: The Tokyo Series Premieres as CNN’s First Exclusive Streaming Content
EXCLUSIVE: CNN has announced its first exclusive documentary for its newly launched subscription streaming tier.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network will present Homecoming: The Tokyo Series, a documentary focused on baseball, which is set to stream on its All Access service following a recent nationwide theatrical release.
Directed and produced by Jason Sterman, a co-executive producer on FX’s The Bear, CNN Films will launch the documentary on March 27.
Homecoming explores how America’s national pastime has evolved into a significant cultural tradition in Japan, marked by ritual, discipline, and dedication. The film is set against the backdrop of Major League Baseball’s season-opening Tokyo Series, showcasing players like Shohei Ohtani on their home turf in a game that has become a way of life.
Homecoming: The Tokyo Series is produced by Supper Club, co-founded by Sterman and Brian McGinn, along with Banijay Americas’ BD4 and MLB Studios. Executive producers include Dan Silver, Nick Trotta, Jamie McBriety, and Sarah Regan.
“MLB’s Tokyo Series reminds us that baseball’s borders keep expanding,” Sterman stated. “This film highlights what happens when a game becomes a culture. The individuals we filmed in Japan don’t just play baseball; they’ve transformed it into something deeply their own. It’s a story that transcends sport, and CNN Films has always known how to present such narratives to audiences.”
Amy Entelis, Executive Vice President of talent and creative development for CNN Worldwide, remarked, “At CNN Films, we are drawn to projects that reveal something essential about the world, and Homecoming achieves this through the lens of sport. This film illustrates how baseball extends beyond the field, connecting cultures and communities globally.”
Dan Silver, CEO of BD4, noted, “Homecoming: The Tokyo Series signifies an important milestone for CNN Films and BD4 as it marks the first feature documentary to premiere exclusively on CNN’s new streaming platform. This reflects the global nature of the story and the evolving ways audiences access premium nonfiction. We are particularly proud that the film’s journey, transitioning from theaters to streaming, showcases BD4’s commitment to crafting thoughtful distribution models that enhance audiences’ engagement with documentaries.”
