Hilary Duff confirmed speculation that her new song “We Don’t Talk” addresses a rift with her sister, Haylie, during a recent interview on CBS Mornings. The discussion coincided with the release of her album, Luck … or Something, on February 20.
In response to correspondent Anthony Mason’s inquiry about the song’s subject, Duff candidly stated, “Yeah, it is.” She reflected on the emotional toll of not having her sister in her life, describing it as “the most lonely part of my existence.”
Duff expressed that she grappled with the decision to include this deeply personal track on her album but ultimately chose to share her truth. “So many people have had similar fallings-out with siblings,” she noted. “It was honestly healing to say. It’s hard to watch your life unfold on the internet sometimes, with talking heads on TikTok speculating… sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right. All of that is a crazy thing to process.”
“We Don’t Talk” is one of 11 tracks on Duff’s first album in ten years. The lyrics reflect her feelings, asking whether jealousy has contributed to their silence: “If it’s ’cause you’re jealous/ God knows I would sell it all, then break you off the bigger half.”
When asked if she hopes Haylie will listen to the song, Duff sounded uncertain: “I don’t think that would help… I hope that for everyone, that is where I’m sitting, you have to do what you want to do.”
She added, “It’s taken me a lot of time to get there and to live that way and to not care what the noise is gonna be around it… It is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience.”
As a former child star, Duff’s life has been under public scrutiny for years. In another track from Luck … or Something titled “The Optimist,” she hints at difficulties with her parents, Robert and Susan, who welcomed Haylie in 1985, followed by Duff two years later.
Recent months have seen heightened speculation regarding Duff’s relationship with Haylie after Ashley Tisdale’s op-ed about leaving a “toxic” mom group, which many believe Hilary was part of. Tisdale later posted about spending time with Haylie, despite Duff’s husband Matthew Koma commenting on the situation, labeling Tisdale’s perspective as “tone deaf.”
Duff shared her thoughts on her complex relationship with Haylie during her interview on CBS Mornings, emphasizing the poignant emotions tied to her experience.
