Hilary Duff and the Lizzie McGuire Cast Reflect on Robert Carradine’s Support: A Heartfelt Tribute
As fans and loved ones mourn the passing of Robert Carradine at the age of 71, his colleagues from the beloved Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire are honoring his memory. Carradine’s family has announced that he died by suicide after a two-decade struggle with bipolar disorder.
The cast of Lizzie McGuire has expressed their sorrow and shared fond memories of Carradine, who played Lizzie’s father, Sam. His presence on set was characterized by a “constant fatherly-like support,” a sentiment echoed by several cast members.
Hilary Duff, who portrayed the titular character, reflected on her relationship with Carradine in an emotional Instagram post, stating, “This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.”
Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s brother Matt, also shared his grief, stating, “My heart hurts today. I was fortunate to know Bobby for most of my life. And he was one of the coolest guys you could ever meet. Funny, pragmatic, sometimes cranky, always a little eccentric.” He added that Carradine was not only talented as an actor, musician, and director but also truly became family. “I have many fond memories being with him and his family throughout my life. Good moments, challenging moments, and lots of laughs between,” Thomas wrote.
Thomas expressed his admiration for Carradine, saying, “I looked up to him growing up. And later in life, I came to realize he thought I was pretty neat, too. So I guess I was doing something right in his eyes. My heart is with Marika and Ian. Rest easy, Bobby. Love you. – ‘Jaker.’”
Lalaine, who played Lizzie’s best friend Miranda Sanchez, shared her grief in an Instagram post, expressing, “It’s really not fair. I’m fu*ked up atm.. I am thankful tho. Thankful I had time with you, thankful for our last conversation, and your constant fatherly-like support. I love you Bobby.”
Carradine’s role on Lizzie McGuire spanned its two-season run from 2001 to 2004. He also appeared in the 2003 film adaptation and reprised his role in a planned Disney+ revival series that was ultimately canceled after filming two episodes.
