Hikers Should Take Caution as Mt. Baldy Trails Reopen After Three Rescues
Warning Issued for Hikers on Mt. Baldy
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. – A cautionary alert has been issued for hikers on Mt. Baldy after the reopening of several trails on Friday, following recent rescue efforts and the tragic deaths of three hikers in December.
Earlier this week, three individuals were rescued after becoming lost while seeking a cell phone signal during their hiking excursion. These rescues come on the heels of a disturbing incident last week when three men were found dead after an apparent fall from the Devil’s Backbone trail.
The reopening of trails follows a temporary closure due to severe winter weather conditions that heightened danger in the area.
Recent Incidents and Rescues
On January 6, an 18-year-old hiker fell approximately 20 feet while navigating the Cucamonga Peak Trail, which is notorious for its steep and rocky conditions. His friends attempted to find a signal to call for assistance but soon became lost themselves. Fortunately, they were located during an aerial search the next day and reunited with their families.
In a separate incident on New Year’s Eve, three hikers—Juan Sarat Lopez, Bayron Pedro Ramos Garcia, and Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova—were found deceased after reportedly falling from the Devil’s Backbone.
Challenges of Mt. Baldy
Mt. Baldy is the highest summit in the San Gabriel Mountains, soaring above 10,000 feet in elevation. The terrain is characterized by challenging trails, especially the Devil’s Backbone, which features significant drop-offs. During winter months, these trails can become perilous due to snow and ice.
The recent events underscore the risks associated with high-altitude hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains, particularly in winter conditions. A minor injury was reported among the search-and-rescue team as they navigated the demanding landscape.
Safety Recommendations for Hikers
Given the dangers highlighted by these incidents, officials advise caution for those venturing into the area. Despite the reopening of trails, conditions remain treacherous, particularly for inexperienced hikers or those lacking appropriate gear.
Safety guidelines include:
Check Altitude and Weather: Be aware of Mt. Baldy’s high elevation and ensure that weather conditions permit safe travel for rescue operations.
Prepare for Treacherous Surfaces: Equip yourself with the right traction gear, as trails can become slick with snow and ice.
Plan for Communication Gaps: Mobile reception is often unreliable in the San Bernardino National Forest. Consider carrying satellite communication devices.
Stay with Injured Parties: Avoid wandering off to seek help, as it can lead to becoming lost.
Respect Steep Drop-offs: Stick to marked trails and avoid edges, especially when icy conditions prevail.
Know Your Turn-Around Time: Factor in the shorter daylight hours during winter when planning your hike.
These precautions are essential for ensuring safety amidst the inherent risks of hiking in this beautiful yet challenging landscape.
