High School Basketball Championships Set for This Weekend
The high school basketball championships are scheduled for this weekend, with both City Section and Southern Section games on the slate. The excitement will culminate in several matchups across various divisions.
City Section Championships
Boys’ Games:
At Southwest College, the Open Division features a showdown between No. 2 Cleveland (20-9) and top seed Palisades (19-11) at 8 p.m. Earlier in the day, Division II will see No. 4 King/Drew (12-19) take on No. 3 Sylmar (19-12) at 6 p.m.
Pasadena City College will host several crucial matches, starting with Division I where No. 2 Chatsworth (14-17) faces off against No. 1 Granada Hills (19-11) at 2 p.m. In Division III, No. 10 Verdugo Hills (15-16) will compete against top seed RFK Community (14-6) at noon, while Division IV will have No. 5 San Fernando (19-11) play No. 2 Franklin (10-21) at 10 a.m.
Girls’ Games:
The action continues at Birmingham High with Division II, where No. 2 North Hollywood (12-7) meets undefeated No. 1 Harbor Teacher (16-0) at 6 p.m. At Southwest College, Division III features No. 2 Gardena (13-14) matched against No. 1 Washington Prep (13-2) at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, Garfield High will host a Division IV contest at 8 p.m. between No. 12 Wilmington Banning (7-13) and No. 11 Bravo (11-17). Additionally, Division V sees No. 9 Los Angeles (9-10) pitted against No. 2 Legacy (5-14) at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s Highlights:
Boys’ Division V at Birmingham High will feature No. 2 Canoga Park (11-18) taking on top seed Van Nuys (10-21) at 8 p.m. The girl’s Open Division will feature a high-stakes matchup between No. 2 Birmingham (27-3) and No. 1 Westchester (25-3) at 6 p.m. Additionally, in Division I, No. 2 Granada Hills Kennedy (20-8) will face off against No. 1 El Camino Real (13-13) at 4 p.m. at Pasadena City College.
Southern Section Championships
Boys’ Games:
At Azusa Pacific, Division 4 will showcase Colony (19-12) against Trabuco Hills (20-12) at 6 p.m. In Division 5, Gardena Serra (20-13) will face Pilibos (17-15) at 2 p.m.
Girls’ Games:
Toyota Arena will host the girls’ contests, including Division 1 where La Salle (28-4) takes on Valencia (28-4) at 8 p.m. Division 2 features Crescenta Valley (27-4) versus Saugus (24-8) at 6 p.m., and Division 3 will see Murrieta Valley (20-11) compete against St. Margaret’s (25-7) at 4 p.m. At Azusa Pacific, Division 4 will witness La Canada (19-12) facing El Dorado (18-14) at 8 p.m., along with Division 6 where Savanna (17-13) takes on Warren (21-10) at 4 p.m.
Saturday’s Focus:
The Toyota Arena will provide a stage for the boys’ Open Division featuring Harvard-Westlake (26-5) against Sierra Canyon (26-1) at 6 p.m. Division 1 will have Crean Lutheran (25-7) compete with JSerra (23-12) at 4 p.m., while Division 2 sees Bishop Amat (27-5) take on Hesperia (24-8) at 11:15 a.m.
In addition, Azusa Pacific will host boys’ Division 6, where Laguna Hills (17-11) faces off against Ramona (27-5) at 8 p.m. Division 7 will showcase Salesian (19-12) against Rialto (16-14) at noon.
On the girls’ side at Toyota Arena, the Open Division matchup between Sierra Canyon (29-2) and Ontario Christian (31-1) is slated for 8 p.m., while Division 8 features Orange (15-11) against Schurr (15-14) at 2 p.m. Azusa Pacific will also host Division 5, where Burbank Burroughs (22-10) competes against Bishop Diego (26-4) at 2 p.m., and Division 7 will see Laguna Hills (17-10) take on La Palma Kennedy (19-12) at 6 p.m. The day concludes with Division 9, as Desert Hot Springs (13-9) faces Sierra Vista (16-13) at 10 a.m.
