In an unconventional move ahead of his new album, Harry Styles appears on the front page of Runner’s World, showcasing not just his musical endeavors but also his passion for running. The pop star revealed in a cover story published Tuesday that running has played a crucial role in his life and the creation of his upcoming album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
Styles reflects on how running has provided him solace amid the challenges of fame. Since rising to global stardom with One Direction in 2010, he has often turned down invitations to social events, leading him to question his motivations. “Over the years, I had to say no to everything I was invited to,” Styles shared. “I started to wonder if I was saying no because I really was so busy or because it was more comfortable than saying yes.”
His struggle with isolation intensified after he embarked on a solo career in 2017. "When you close yourself off to protect yourself from people who might bring negativity into your life, you’re also missing out on positive experiences," he stated.
The Runner’s World feature arrives just days prior to the March 6 release of Styles’ fourth studio album, which follows the success of Harry’s House, a record that topped the Billboard 200 chart in 2022. Styles noted a “synergy” between running and music, describing running as a time for reflection. “When I’m running is when I have … time to think a lot about what I’m making and other things in my life too,” he said.
Fans have long recognized Styles’ passion for running; he has been spotted jogging in cities like London and Rome. He has also participated in marathons in Tokyo and Berlin, achieving notable finishes. Running allows Styles to navigate public spaces without attracting excessive attention. "The main thing is that you’re always moving," he explained. "You can turn a corner wherever. I think with people who see me, it’s a bit more, ‘Was that …?’ rather than, ‘Oh look, it’s him!’ And by that time, you’re already gone.”
Moreover, running serves as a grounding activity for Styles, especially following the intensity of touring. His recent Love on Tour spanned from 2021 to 2023, with a new international tour set to begin in May. Reflecting on his experiences, he remarked, “Something I’ve often struggled with, in the middle of a tour, is feeling like I’m not sure what I’m giving, not sure what I’m adding to the world.”
As anticipation builds for his album release, Styles’ unique blend of music and athleticism continues to resonate with fans and followers alike.
