Warning: This article contains spoilers about Song Sung Blue.
When Eddie Vedder appears in Song Sung Blue to cover a Neil Diamond song with Lightning & Thunder, the Milwaukee duo depicted by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, it seems like a scripted biopic moment. However, this surprising scene has roots in reality.
Vedder, a two-time Grammy winner, truly shared the stage with Mike "Lightning" Sardina and Claire "Thunder" Sardina during a Pearl Jam concert. This performance was captured on film for Song Sung Blue, the 2008 documentary directed by Greg Kohs, which served as the inspiration for Craig Brewer’s scripted adaptation.
In Song Sung Blue, the narrative unfolds differently; Lightning & Thunder are invited to open for Pearl Jam at a local Milwaukee theater, mirroring the venue where they perform their final gig onscreen. In reality, however, the duo sang with Pearl Jam during an encore at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on July 8, 1995.

That performance is also featured in the documentary, now available for streaming on YouTube. Recently, Pearl Jam shared a clip of the moment on their official social media platforms.
"We have another hometown special guest for you," Vedder announced to a crowd of nearly 30,000 fans before inviting Lightning & Thunder to the stage. "I believe he’s fairly famous, and he’s here with his wife. They’re going to do a little number for you and I just hope you enjoy the f— out of it. Let’s bring them out, Lightning & Thunder!"
Both in reality and in the film, Lightning & Thunder perform Diamond’s 1978 hit "Forever in Blue Jeans," with Vedder joining for the bridge. Yet, while Vedder (portrayed by John Beckwith in the film) appears confident onscreen, the documentary reveals that the real Vedder struggled with the lyrics, singing from a seated position while reading them off a page.
Notably, Mike Sardina mentioned that Vedder initially preferred to sing "Song Sung Blue," a 1972 Diamond song. "I said, I gotta be honest with you, this crowd ain’t about ‘Song Sung Blue.’ I think they’re about ‘Forever in Blue Jeans,’" Mike recalled, noting Vedder’s unfamiliarity with the song.

Describing the experience, Mike noted, "Vedder was sitting there on a stool with his legs crossed, reading the words. And I’m like, ‘Eddie! Go for it!’" Ultimately, Vedder delivered, declaring, "It’s the original grunge song," before powering through the final chorus.
Reflecting on the moment, Claire recalled, "My wedding to Lightning, Pearl Jam concert with 30,000 people — never did I think I’d have an opportunity like that, alongside the birth of my children. Those three things stand out as the most exciting moments of my entire life."
Interestingly, Mike initially had no knowledge of who Vedder was when they first met. "He said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ I said, ‘No,’" Mike recounted, leading to Vedder’s playful response about his identity as the famous Pearl Jam frontman.
Their friendship left a lasting impact on both, with Mike often praising Vedder in interviews. "He was so great to my wife, so great to me. I respect Eddie Vedder more than anybody in this business," he said.

Following Mike’s death on July 27, 2006, at the age of 55, Vedder sent Claire a Gibson guitar for Mike’s funeral, accompanied by a heartfelt note.
"Time is long and life is short. It is with a heavy heart that I write this after hearing about Mike Sardina," he expressed. In the letter, he conveyed, "I remember him saying that he had always wanted a real Gibson Everly Brothers guitar… I lift my eyes to the sky and make a toast to Lightning & Thunder, in love. Thanks for the music and the memories."
Claire, now 64, recalled reading the note: "Unbelievable," she said.
Vedder, now 61, continues to advocate for Lightning & Thunder. He permitted the use of Pearl Jam’s "Alive" in Song Sung Blue, a significant licensing event, and played a pivotal role in ensuring Neil Diamond’s music could be featured in the original documentary.
"Eddie Vedder is the MVP of Lightning & Thunder," Brewer told Entertainment Weekly. He recounted how Vedder intervened with Diamond’s publishing company to allow the documentary’s premiere and secure the necessary music rights.
Song Sung Blue is currently in theaters.
