Harry Potter TV Series Coming to HBO in 2027: What We Know About the Cast, Creators, and J.K. Rowling’s Involvement
HBO’s Upcoming Harry Potter Series Enters Production and Confirms Second Season
HBO has officially announced that its much-anticipated Harry Potter television series has entered production. Alongside this update, a first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, complete with iconic glasses, has been released.
The main cast features McLaughlin as the titular character, with Alastair Stout portraying Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton stepping into the role of Hermione Granger, rounding out the beloved trio. The series will also introduce four of Ron’s six siblings, enhancing the familiar Hogwarts landscape.
“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all these years,” stated Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, assuring viewers of its fidelity to J.K. Rowling’s original works. Production began on July 14, 2025, at Leavesden Studios, with the show expected to run for ten consecutive years across multiple seasons.
WBD is actively exploring collaborations with Framestore, the British VFX company known for its work on the original film series. Director Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two movies, endorsed the reboot, calling it a “spectacular idea.”
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed a new era for Harry Potter fans during a streaming event in April 2023, detailing plans for a comprehensive television adaptation spanning all seven of Rowling’s books. The show will premiere on Christmas 2026.
The significant investment in this new Harry Potter series reflects WBD’s desire to capitalize on the franchise’s enduring popularity. CEO David Zaslav emphasized the potential for increased Hogwarts-related content, stating that the property has been “underused” in recent years.
In addition to continuing the legacy, casting for the series involved rigorous auditions, ultimately selecting McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton from over 32,000 young actors. The team has committed to inclusive and diverse casting practices, with roles tailored for young actors that align with the age of characters in the early books.
As for the original film stars, reports suggest that while no current plans exist for their return, the door remains open for various possibilities, including cameo appearances or flashback sequences. Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter in the film series, expressed support for the new direction and indicated a preference for a fresh start.
J.K. Rowling’s involvement as an executive producer adds a layer of authenticity to the project, with plans for her to work closely with the creative team. The partnership aims to ensure that the series retains the essence of her beloved narratives.
Bloys assured that the production will have the resources required to deliver a high-quality show, akin to the scale of other successful HBO projects like House of the Dragon. The long-term prospects for Harry Potter content appear promising, as Warner Bros. Discovery aims to explore new ventures within the expansive wizarding world.
As the project progresses, it seems that Harry Potter is poised for a new chapter, affirming its place in the contemporary entertainment landscape. The combination of fresh talent, established expertise, and a deep connection to the source material may well captivate both longtime fans and a new generation.
