As you celebrate your 10th anniversary, how do you reflect on the past decade?
Yukina: When HANABIE. formed, I was just starting high school, and I never imagined we would last this long. I focused on my vision, and before I knew it, ten years had passed. I had written in my notebook that I wanted to be a star in the Japanese heavy rock scene, but I never expected to have fans around the world.
So your current reality has exceeded your expectations. Do you attribute that to your dedication to your goals?
Yukina: Absolutely. Another important aspect is that we’ve always enjoyed what we do. It never felt like a grind. My bandmates are not just colleagues; they’re my friends and family. Over the past decade, our circumstances have changed significantly, but our belief in our music has remained strong thanks to one another.
Matsuri: Those ten years flew by, but looking back, there were significant turning points for us. The main takeaway is that being in a band is incredibly fun. I’ve experienced unique moments that can only come from being in a band. My dreams have expanded over the years, and I think about what new genres we could explore or what costumes we might wear decades from now.
Hettsu: Reflecting on the past decade, our journey has certainly seen many ups and downs. (laughs) Those experiences shaped who we are today. After ten years, my desire for us to continue playing together is stronger than ever.
Chika, you joined HANABIE. in 2023. What are your thoughts on the band’s history?
Chika: In my three years with the band, we’ve faced various challenges. (laughs) It amazes me that the original members started as friends and have maintained that bond. Watching our older performances on YouTube, I see how much we’ve all improved as musicians over the decade. (laughs)
Matsuri: I find it hard to watch our old videos; they’re quite embarrassing. (laughs)
Are you committed to a long future with the band, Chika?
Chika: Absolutely. I want to contribute to our growth and momentum.
You recently toured Europe. How was that experience?
Matsuri: Last year, we performed in Europe twice, with our fall tour featuring significantly larger venues. It struck me how many people, even overseas, wanted to see us. After three years of touring abroad, I feel our international fans are rooting for us as we grow. Their enthusiasm was palpable during the tour, and I believe it’s crucial for us to continue engaging with them.
Yukina: Touring overseas is an adventure. We travel by bus and perform daily, making each day feel like a new experience. Although we face challenges, the thrill of touring in different countries with varied languages and vibes energizes us.
Indeed, there’s no time to feel bored.
Yukina: Exactly. And when we perform, the energy from the crowd is incredibly moving. It’s a reminder that we are all part of something special. I appreciate every moment and feel grateful for our experiences, particularly last year’s European tour, which left a lasting impression.
Considering some audience members may not understand Japanese, how do you communicate with fans?
Yukina: We primarily speak in English during our shows but also attempt to use local languages. Regardless, fans often sing along in Japanese, and it’s heartwarming to see that connection, transcending language barriers.
With the release of your newest EP, HOT TOPIC, why did you choose “Spicy Queen” to commemorate your anniversary?
Matsuri: I didn’t initially plan for “Spicy Queen” to be tied to our anniversary. It was written during our tour in the US with Kim Dracula, which inspired me. I aimed for a back-to-basics sound, focusing on our core style. Once Yukina heard it, she suggested it would be perfect for marking our tenth anniversary, prompting final adjustments to align it with the occasion.
Yukina: Its solid, heavy sound resonated with me as the ideal choice for our anniversary. It also allowed us to reference some fond memories from our tour, like our experience tasting spicy Nashville chicken.
Thus, personal touches enhance the song’s significance.
Matsuri: The EP’s artwork also represents a shift in our artistic direction. Our previous illustrations conveyed a more youthful essence, while the new design reflects more maturity.
Matsuri: The artwork aims to express duality, illustrating resilience and optimism. We want to inspire others to embrace their true selves as everyone is the protagonist in their own story.
How does the theme of the first song, “ICONIC,” reflect that ethos?
Matsuri: The lyrics represent a departure from our past selves.
Yukina: Exactly. Early on, our lyrics would have likely been in Japanese. Our experiences touring internationally highlighted how different words resonate with audiences. The lyrics of “ICONIC” were crafted authentically in English, reflecting our evolution.
Matsuri: After a decade, we felt compelled to express who we are now.
Yukina: Our listeners often face challenges where they feel overwhelmed. We hope “ICONIC” encourages them to break free and accept themselves.
You will be beginning a North American tour in March, correct?
Matsuri: Yes, it’s been almost a year since our last US visit, and I’m eager for audiences to see how we have evolved during our ten-year journey.
Chika: We hope to challenge the perception of us as merely a “girls’ band” and aim to put on powerful performances.
Yukina: Following the tour, we will concentrate on our activities in Japan for the time being, cherishing every moment of this American tour. When we return, we aim to demonstrate our growth to the world.
