Shark Sighting Leads to Water Closure in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Authorities have imposed an indefinite water closure at Newport Beach following the sighting of an approximately 8-foot great white shark that was circling a surfer on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 1:15 PM near 35th Street, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. While the surfer was unharmed, the aggressive behavior of the shark raised significant safety concerns.

To ensure public safety, lifeguards initiated a four-hour closure of the water. However, the city extended this restriction "until further notice," as officials continue to assess the situation.

Currently, while beachgoers are permitted access to the sand, swimming is strictly prohibited between the Santa Ana River jetty and 44th Street.

Authorities are in the process of monitoring the shoreline and have not yet determined if the shark has left the area or if multiple sharks are present. A specific timeline for the reopening of the water has not been established.

Lifeguards and city officials will maintain ongoing patrols to monitor for any additional sightings. Neighboring lifeguard agencies are also on alert to track the shark’s movements along the Orange County coastline. An update on the status of the water closure is anticipated once a period of no sightings is confirmed.

Beachgoers are advised to adhere to all posted signage and lifeguard instructions. While enjoying the beach from the sand is permitted, entering the water is not advisable until further notice from officials.
