Eric Dane’s Cause of Death Explained
Actor Eric Dane Dies at 53 After ALS Battle
Eric Dane, renowned for his roles in popular television series "Grey’s Anatomy" and "Euphoria," has passed away at the age of 53. According to his death certificate, he succumbed to respiratory failure last month, nearly one year after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive disease that affects nerve cells controlling muscle movement.
Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, 15-year-old Billie Beatrice and 13-year-old Georgia Geraldine. In a statement, his family shared that he spent his last days surrounded by loved ones.
"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight," the family said. "Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received."
Dane first gained fame in the mid-2000s as Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as McSteamy, in the ABC medical drama "Grey’s Anatomy," a role he held from 2006 until 2012 and later reprised in 2021. He also portrayed Cal Jacobs, a complex married man, in HBO’s "Euphoria."
Following his diagnosis, Dane dedicated himself to raising awareness about ALS, and his memoir is set to be published in late 2026.
