Glendale Doctor Faces Charges for Allegedly Submitting $45M in Fake Botox Claims to Medicare
Glendale Physician Charged with Medicare Fraud
A physician from Glendale is facing serious allegations of defrauding Medicare through fraudulent claims for Botox injections. The U.S. Justice Department announced the indictment of Dr. Violetta Mailyan on Thursday, detailing claims that she submitted over $45 in false Medicare billing.
According to the DOJ, the Botox injections associated with these claims were either not medically necessary or never administered. Prosecutors allege that Mailyan filed claims for services during times when she was traveling internationally or when patients were outside of the United States. In at least one instance, claims were submitted for an individual who was incarcerated at the time.
Dr. Mailyan has promoted herself as a "facial aesthetic doctor" and a board-certified physician specializing in beauty, as reflected on her social media profiles.
She faces nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation related to healthcare offenses. If convicted, Dr. Mailyan could face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and up to five years for each count of obstruction.
