Warner Bros. Unveils First Look at J.J. Abrams’ Sci-Fi Film ‘The Great Beyond’
Warner Bros. has provided an exclusive first look at The Great Beyond, a sci-fi fantasy film directed by J.J. Abrams. This marks Abrams’ return to directing since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
During his presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday, Abrams emphasized his desire to create original stories, stating, “I love franchises, but felt like I needed to get back to telling original stories.”
Starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, The Great Beyond has remained shrouded in mystery since its announcement, with its logline kept confidential. The newly released preview sets an intriguing atmosphere, featuring an early-generation computer typing out a quote from H.G. Wells: “There is, though I do not know how there is, or how it may be, another world out of sight and sound.”
Voiceovers reveal a couple in search of something greater, with one line suggesting, “The world you think you know the limits of, you can’t even begin to fathom,” hinting at an extraordinary discovery in their journey.
Abrams not only directed the film but also penned the screenplay and is producing alongside Tommy Gormley through Bad Robot. Scheduled for release on November 13, the cast includes Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson.
This preview of The Great Beyond comes on the heels of news regarding Abrams’ Bad Robot, which will streamline its operations, shifting to a smaller team based in New York while closing its Los Angeles office. Nonetheless, the company will continue to honor its first-look film and television deal with Warner Bros. into the next year.
Upcoming releases from Bad Robot include David Robert Mitchell’s sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, premiering on August 14. Other projects in development are the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! and the second season of Presumed Innocent for Apple.
