Galaxy Takes Early Lead but Settles for Draw Against Vancouver Whitecaps
Mathias Laborda’s timely goal in the 82nd minute secured a 1-1 draw for the Vancouver Whitecaps against the LA Galaxy on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson. This result halted the Whitecaps’ impressive run, as the team had previously achieved a franchise record with four consecutive wins in regular-season play.
The match saw the Whitecaps (8-1-1) become just the second MLS team since 2000 to secure eight victories in their first nine games of the season. Laborda’s equalizing goal came via a free kick taken by Sebastian Berhalter, who delivered the ball to the back post, allowing Laborda to head it in from close range.
Possession statistics favored the Whitecaps, who controlled 58% of the game, and they significantly outshot the Galaxy, 19-7, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on target.
Joseph Paintsil initially put the Galaxy (3-4-4) ahead in the 46th minute. After Lucas Sanabria intercepted a misplayed ball from Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka just seconds into the second half, he assisted Paintsil, who converted from the right side of the penalty area.
On the defensive end, JT Marcinkowski recorded four saves for the Galaxy, while Takaoka finished the match with one save.
