Five Students Earn Evans Scholarships Through Caddying Experience
Five Los Angeles High School Students Earn Prestigious Scholarship Through Caddying
In a remarkable achievement, five high school students from the Los Angeles area have been awarded the Evans Scholarship, a prestigious grant that covers full tuition and housing for golf caddies pursuing higher education.
This year’s scholarship recipients include Amaia Diaz and Marley Gomez from St. Mary’s Academy, Joel Arriaga Lopez and Sara Mejia from Compton Early College High, and Cesar Sierra from Salesian. The Western Golf Association Caddie Academy, which provides training for these young caddies, plays a vital role in supporting the scholarship program.
The Evans Scholarship has seen a record enrollment this year, with 1,260 caddies attending 27 universities. Since its inception in 1930, over 12,000 individuals have graduated as Evans Scholars. To qualify for this prestigious scholarship, candidates must exhibit a strong caddying history, outstanding academic performance, demonstrated financial need, and exceptional character.
“Caddying taught me discipline, patience, and responsibility,” noted Sierra, reflecting on the skills gained through the experience. During their summer training, all five students worked as caddies in Illinois. The scholarship is valued at more than $125,000 over four years, underscoring the significant opportunity it provides to its recipients.
In a world where academic achievement is increasingly critical, the Evans Scholarship stands as a testament to the positive impact that caddying can have on young lives.
