LAFC Takes on a Challenging Match with Coach Bruce Arena and the Earthquakes
Bruce Arena Shares Insights Ahead of Key Match Against LAFC
Bruce Arena, the most successful coach in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, is known for his insightful commentary on the league. As his San José Earthquakes prepare for a pivotal match against LAFC on Sunday at BMO Stadium, his perspective carries considerable weight. The Earthquakes are off to their best start in franchise history, holding a record of 6-1-0 as they enter the weekend tied for the league lead in both wins and points.
“It’s very early in the season,” Arena noted. “You don’t get too crazy in the early going.” However, the significance of wins in April cannot be overlooked, as they carry the same weight as those in October. Sunday’s match against LAFC, who currently sit at 5-1-1, poses a significant challenge for the Earthquakes, particularly since they have secured only two victories against teams with winning records.
Returning to management for a fourth stint in the league last season, Arena has led a team that has struggled since its last winning record in 2013. Following his takeover, the franchise faced uncertainty as it was up for sale midway through the season. Amid these challenges, Arena has remained focused.
“There’s a lot of things that are going to probably happen here in the next year,” he said, acknowledging the potential for new ownership. “So my focus is on this team at this time and the next game. I’m not trying to dictate a five-year plan at the moment.”
Historically, Arena’s success with the LA Galaxy, where he won three MLS Cups and two Supporters’ Shields, has set a high standard. The Earthquakes, under his guidance, showcase a strong defensive performance, allowing a league-low of only two goals and matching LAFC for the fewest shots conceded.
In a bold move, Arena successfully signed former German World Cup player Timo Werner to a multiyear contract reportedly worth $5.4 million per season. This acquisition marks Werner as the highest-paid player in franchise history and represents a significant commitment from a team that previously had one of the lowest payrolls in the league.
As the Earthquakes brace for their matchup against LAFC, they will face a squad that started the season with a record six consecutive shutouts and currently ranks third in scoring with 15 goals over seven matches. LAFC has also advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, putting the team on the brink of a historic third final appearance in the region’s premier club tournament.
Despite LAFC’s impressive start, Arena cautioned against overhyping their current success. “Could they possibly be one of the best teams in MLS history? Yes. But I would say that they haven’t won that much that you can make that statement,” he remarked, acknowledging their status as the league’s leading team.
LAFC head coach Marc Dos Santos echoed Arena’s sentiments about the strength of the Earthquakes. “Very difficult opponent to play,” he said. “Defensively, very compact. A team that doesn’t give much. They’re a team that work collectively together. They know what they want to do.”
With both teams poised for a critical clash, the match promises to be a key moment in the season for both franchises.
