Firm Engaged to Improve Lighting on 6th Street Bridge Ahead of LA28
Los Angeles Moves to Restore Sixth Street Bridge Ahead of 2028 Olympics
As the countdown to the 2028 Olympics continues, Los Angeles is prioritizing the restoration of the iconic Sixth Street Bridge. The structure has struggled with maintenance issues, primarily due to a series of copper wire thefts that have left portions of it inoperable.
The city has launched a comprehensive plan exceeding $5 million, which aims to not only repair the bridge but also enhance the surrounding park area. Key components of this initiative include the installation of security cameras to deter future thefts.
Since its reopening in 2022, the bridge has faced numerous challenges, including incidents of fireworks, illegal car gatherings, street takeovers, and vandalism. The impact of copper wire thefts has extended beyond the bridge, causing disruptions in lighting for neighborhoods such as El Sereno and Lincoln Heights.
In response to these ongoing issues, city officials, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department, established a task force last year focused on addressing copper wire thefts. To further support these efforts, the city has engaged engineers from Tetra Tech to assist in restoring the wiring and lighting across the bridge, including its ramps, arches, and stairways.
Additionally, Councilmember Ysabel Jurado has allocated $1 million in discretionary funds to aid the street light repair initiative, underscoring the city’s commitment to reclaiming this significant landmark before it becomes a focal point during the upcoming Olympics.
