Federal Investigation into LAUSD for Teacher Reassignments Linked to Sexual Misconduct Claims
Feds Investigate LAUSD Over Teacher Reassignments Amid Misconduct Allegations
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is currently under federal investigation due to allegations that it reassigns teachers accused of sexual misconduct instead of removing them from student-facing roles. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has initiated this inquiry to examine the district’s policies regarding the handling of such allegations.
According to a statement from the Department of Education issued Tuesday, the investigation will focus on LAUSD’s practices related to teachers accused of sexual misconduct, including what has been described as exploitative romantic relationships with students. Federal officials assert that, rather than taking teachers out of educational environments, LAUSD may simply reassign them to different schools.
The district has categorically denied these claims, stating that reassignment typically means that individuals are directed to remain at home, away from all students. LAUSD emphasized that decisions regarding reassignment are made with student and staff safety as top priorities.
“Reassignment means an employee is directed to stay home during an investigation. Our actions are guided first and foremost by the safety of our students,” a district spokesperson said.
The federal investigation was triggered by a settlement agreement reached in 2024 between LAUSD and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). This agreement reportedly outlines conditions for reassigning instructors accused of misconduct; however, it does not clarify whether these new roles involve contact with students.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey expressed concern, stating, “The district seems to be putting the continued employment of sexual predators above the safety of students.” She highlighted that failing to follow Title IX procedures can lead to significant harm to vulnerable children.
Currently, it is unclear how many teachers have been reassigned under the 2024 agreement or which schools they were moved to. While the Department of Education alleges that these reassignments happen to other schools, LAUSD has not disclosed data on the number of teachers instructed to stay home versus those moved to new administrative assignments.
The DOE’s review will assess whether LAUSD is compliant with Title IX procedural requirements. Should violations be discovered, the district may face mandatory policy revisions or a potential loss of federal funding. In light of the ongoing investigation, LAUSD has asserted its commitment to adhering to established Title IX procedures and taking decisive action if violations are verified.
