Farewell from CBS Evening News: Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson Say Goodbye
John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois signed off as co-anchors of the CBS Evening News on Thursday, marking a significant shift as the network revamps its evening program under new news division editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
Both anchors had announced their departures in recent weeks, a move that was anticipated. They will be succeeded by Tony Dokoupil, currently a co-host of CBS Mornings, who is set to begin on January 5.
In an emotional farewell, Dickerson expressed his admiration for DuBois, stating, “You know, a year and a half ago, we didn’t even know each other, and you have become a model for me and a trusted friend.” He added, “What viewers don’t know is that long before they could see us, we were thinking about you, the viewers. Planning for months in a conference room, we talked about your attention, how precious it was, and how we would honor it. The question has guided the decisions you saw and many you didn’t: A research team that sweats the facts that shape how you see the world. Correspondents who follow the facts into war zones, into countries where they can be jailed, into powerful exchanges with the powerful who don’t like being held to account, including a president who insulted them for it.”
The broadcast featured a clip of Donald Trump confronting a reporter, asking, “Are you stupid?” Further clips showcased significant stories, with Dickerson reflecting that they were narratives “of wonder, of loss, of courage, asking why until the answers ran out. It’s been an honor to put the work of our correspondents, producers, editors, and writers before you, and to work with my partner Maurice, who put his heart into our shared concern—doing right by you. Your expectation has been our responsibility, and our reward.”
DuBois responded, “That it has, my friend.” The farewell concluded with Dickerson saying, “Thank you for watching,” followed by DuBois, who echoed Edward R. Murrow’s iconic sign-off, “And good night, and good luck.”
Dickerson and DuBois began their partnership last year as part of a revamped CBS Evening News format following the departure of Norah O’Donnell. The new approach emphasized correspondent storytelling and integrating elements from 60 Minutes. However, the program has struggled to gain ground, remaining in third place behind ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC Nightly News, the latter of which recently saw an anchor change with Tom Llamas succeeding Lester Holt.
Both Dickerson and DuBois are departing from CBS. Dickerson, who joined CBS News in 2009, has held various positions, including moderator of Face the Nation, co-host of CBS This Morning, and correspondent for 60 Minutes. DuBois, who began his career with WCBS-TV in New York in 2004, has been a prominent figure at the network-owned station.
