- Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19.
The first reactions to Avatar: Fire and Ash have emerged.
Although the film from acclaimed director James Cameron won’t premiere until December 19, early screenings on December 1 have prompted overwhelmingly positive feedback. Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they journey back to the lush landscapes of Pandora.
Erik Davis from Fandango described Fire and Ash as “a phenomenal moviegoing experience,” labeling it “the biggest of the three” films in the Avatar series.
“Action-packed, visually jaw-dropping, and rich with themes of family, legacy, and survival,” he noted. “The way it intertwines fire, water, air, and land throughout is remarkable. This is pure blockbuster filmmaking at its finest. The narrative manages to unify all three films, focusing on the Sully family’s struggle to define their identity. It prioritizes who you believe in over what you believe in. While it serves as a conclusion to a trilogy, it also leaves room for future stories.”
In a reaction on X, Collider‘s Rachel Leishman remarked that the film maintains the grandeur of its predecessors while enriching the lore of Cameron’s Pandora. She characterized Jake Sully as a “hot good dad” and praised the Na’vi’s captivating nature. However, she expressed a sentiment that it felt reminiscent of previous installments: “I’ll protect the Pandora otters with my life,” she added.

Critic Courtney Howard remarked on X that director Cameron “still has the sauce,” delivering a film that is both spectacular and emotionally resonant. “A glorious saga. Bold, brilliant & awesome in every way, this is what movie theaters were built for,” she stated, adding that while Payakan remains her favorite, Varang is the standout character.
Writer Mike Ryan noted that Cameron’s Avatar films are unique: “even though a couple of beats were repeated from the previous film,” he commented. “For over three hours, I was on a different planet. Oona Chaplin’s portrayal of the evil fire Na’vi was truly unnerving.”

Perri Nemiroff from Collider commented that she is still in awe of the magic inherent in the Avatar series. “I wish I had more original phrasing, but #AvatarFireAndAsh truly feels like a ride,” she articulated. “Once pulled back into the world of Pandora, the complexity of various production elements became quite noticeable.”
In addition to Worthington and Saldaña, the cast also features Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, and Jack Champion. New names include Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis, who portray leaders of new Na’vi clans introduced in the film.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set for theatrical release on December 19.
