Families of Children Affected by Social Media Speak Out at Snapchat Headquarters
Parents Demand Changes to Snapchat Amid Rising Concerns Over Social Media Harms
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Over 40 families from the United States and the United Kingdom gathered outside Snapchat’s headquarters in Santa Monica on Thursday morning to advocate for safety reforms in response to their children’s deaths attributed to social media-related issues.
The demonstration saw protesters blocking traffic and painting a street memorial featuring the names of more than 100 children, many of whom the families claim lost their lives due to fentanyl poisoning allegedly facilitated by the platform.
"We aim to create a pop-up memorial for our children," an organizer stated. "Our goal is to push for necessary changes to make Snapchat a safer environment for all users."
Coinciding with this protest is a landmark trial in Los Angeles focused on social media addiction, a growing concern among advocates and lawmakers alike. While families expressed deep frustration, a Snap spokesperson emphasized their commitment to combatting illegal activities on their platform. "Snap unequivocally condemns the criminal conduct of the drug dealers whose actions led to these tragedies," the representative stated. "Addressing the fentanyl crisis demands a united front among law enforcement, government officials, medical professionals, parents, educators, tech companies, and advocacy organizations."
The protest took place near 31st Street, adjacent to Ocean Park Boulevard and the airport. Families participating in the event highlighted the significant impact of fentanyl on teenagers and the urgent need for safety reforms on social media platforms like Snapchat.
As these families continue to advocate for change, the implications of their actions resonate far beyond their immediate concerns, affecting broader conversations about the responsibility of social media companies in safeguarding users from harmful content and illegal activities.
